91 chevy corsica - thermostat went bad, car overheated, wont start!

Drove this car for a few days after taking it over from a family member.  Had previously been driving fine in-town every day.  Was driven 120 miles to deliver to me, no problems on that trip.  Later that night, temp gauge shot up while driving, would cool slightly during idle, but would shoot up again while moving.  Car was not actually "overheating", was operating normal, no radiator sputtering or anything either.  (NOTE:  radiator had been filled with coolant just prior to being driven the 120 miles to us)  A couple of days later, car did start to over heat just before getting home; upon opening hood, radiator was gurgling.  Released steam, added water and allowed car to cool overnight.
